Understanding Your Personality Type: Cautious, Critical, Calculating Contemplator
Some people are perfectionists in every aspect of their lives. They believe in all of their work being done perfectly, and they can’t stand it when things aren’t perfectly neat and tidy. They are sticklers for following the rules to the letter. If this describes you, you may be a cautious contemplator. Contemplators love art and music, and they are often very creative. They think things through very carefully before acting and tend to ask specific clarifying questions – details are very important to the contemplator. And they are usually very private people, making it difficult to get to know them. Contemplators at Work Contemplators are hard workers, but it may take them a bit longer to finish tasks. That’s because they are so thorough. They take their time in the first place, and then they go over their work repeatedly to make sure there are no mistakes. Cautious contemplators are best suited to positions and tasks in which details are important. The contemplator may have a hard time making decisions, because she does not want to make the wrong one. But her attention to detail makes her a good problem solver, and her creativity allows her to come up with original solutions to tough problems. Once she has made a decision, you can be sure that she will analyze the results and file them away for future reference. The Social Contemplator Contemplators are often uncomfortable when they are around people they don’t know. They do better in one-on-one situations than interacting with groups. Contemplators are not very open, so only their closest friends know about their deepest thoughts and beliefs. Weaknesses of the Contemplator One of the contemplator’s biggest downfalls is the fact that she is overly critical of herself, as well as others. On the rare occasion that she does make a mistake, she is devastated. She holds herself to impossibly high standards, and when she falls short she is terribly disappointed. Contemplators are also very sensitive to the criticism of others. They often read more into it than is actually there, believing that the criticizer does not like them or their work as a whole. This negativity can further slow the contemplator down, and may even lead her to give up because she believes that she’s not good enough. Risk-taking is not something that the contemplator enjoys. This can result in missed opportunities. It can also be a source of conflict between the contemplator and doers or influencers. It is essential that these personality types really work at understanding the contemplator if they are to work or socialize together. How Others See the Contemplator The contemplator may appear shy, aloof or unhappy to others until they get to know her. But once they give her a chance, they find that she is polite and dependable. And when they break through her shell, they realize that she is smart, creative, and loyal.
