Understanding Your Personality Type: Shy, Steady, Sensitive Supporter
Is keeping the peace one of your main objectives in all aspects of your life? Are you generally content with the status quo? Do you tend to keep your emotions under wraps? If so, chances are you fall under the supporter personality type. As the name suggests, supporters are good at doing support work. They are also easygoing, and they tend to be very quiet – especially in large groups. But supporters also crave a small amount of attention, and they like to know that their opinions are respected when they choose to share them. Supporters Are Adaptable One of the hardest things to understand about a supporter, even for the supporter himself, is his attitude toward change. While a supporter prefers for things to remain consistent, he is also capable of adapting to any situation. His easygoing nature makes him unlikely to rock the boat, but when it is rocked anyway he can adjust. Supporters may hold some strong opinions, but others are unlikely to find out about them quickly. Supporters are not interested in pushing their agendas on the rest of the world. They simply want the freedom to believe as they see fit, and they grant others the same. If the subject comes up a supporter is usually willing to share his opinion, but he is rarely interested in arguing about it. How Others See the Supporter The supporter’s quiet nature may cause others to believe that he is arrogant or snobbish. But once they get to know him, they realize he is simply very easygoing. They also find that he is a great listener, and he makes a good, loyal friend. Supporters are often seen as pushovers, because they ask rather than tell and their innate ability to quietly adapt to change. More aggressive personality types may try to run over the supporter, so to speak. When pressed, however, the supporter will stand up for himself. Supporters are not terribly energetic, and others often misconstrue this as laziness. They are actually quite willing and able to get a job done, they just don’t work as quickly as dominant doers or energetic influencers. They prefer to take their time and do a good job rather than rush through something. Weaknesses of the Supporter One of the things that supporters often struggle with is lack of motivation. They tend to be indecisive procrastinators, and they need reminders to keep them on track. And because they are not motivated to push their opinions on anyone, they are not well suited to jobs or situations that require them to be persuasive. Supporters’ lack of assertiveness and decisiveness means that they have trouble being leaders, but they may also have trouble dealing with them. Doers in particular tend to have personality conflicts with supporters, because they are so different from each other. In order for any type of relationship between a supporter and a doer to work, they must take the time to understand one another’s motivations and adjust to them. The supporter is easy to get along with, and he is willing to help others. He is people-oriented and tries to live in harmony with everyone else. While the supporter is not interested in being the center of attention, he thrives on his relationships with other people.
